Window Shoppers
These spiritual window-shoppers,
who idly ask, 'How much is that?' Oh, I'm just looking.
They handle a hundred items and put them down,
shadows with no capital.
What is spent is love and two eyes wet with weeping.
But these walk into a shop,
and their whole lives pass suddenly in that moment,
in that shop.
Where did you go? "Nowhere."
What did you have to eat? "Nothing much."
Even if you don't know what you want,
buy _something,_ to be part of the exchanging flow.
Start a huge, foolish project,
like Noah.
It makes absolutely no difference
what people think of you.

Look at everything....
Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time. Then your time on earth will be filled with glory.

Difficult things....
All difficult things have their origin in that which is easy, and great things in that which is small.

Be Observant
If thou wilt be observant and vigilant, thou wilt see at every moment the response to thy action.
Be observant if thou wouldst have a pure heart, for something is born to thee in consequence of every action.

Courage means....
Courage means to keep working a relationship, to continue seeking solutions to difficult problems, and to stay focused during stressful periods.

A Star Without A Name
A Star Without a Name
When a baby is taken from the wet nurse,
it easily forgets her
and starts eating solid food.
Seeds feed awhile on ground,
then lift up into the sun.
So you should taste the filtered light
and work your way toward wisdom
with no personal covering.
That's how you came here,
like a star without a name.
Move across the night sky with those anonymous lights.
(Mathnawi III, 1284-1288)

Peace in the World
If there is righteousness in the heart
There will be beauty in the character;
If there is beauty in the character
There will be harmony in the home;
When there is harmony in the home
There will be order in the nation;
When there is order in the nation
There will be peace in the world.

Never act out of anger....
Never speak out of anger,
Never act out of fear,
Never choose from impatience,
But wait... and peace will appear.

Within us...
The geat blessing of mankind are within us and within our reach;
but we shut our eyes, and like people in the dark, we fall foul upon the very thing we search for, without finding it.

Self
It is of practical value to learn to like yourself.
Since you must spend so much time with yourself you might as well get some satisfaction out of the relationship.

Everyday...
Every day is a new beginning.
Treat it that way.
Stay away from what might have been, and look at what can be.

A Stage....
Our life's a stage, a comedy: either learn to play and take it lightly, or bear its troubles patiently.

Stories
If stories come to you, care for them.
And learn to give them away where they are needed.
Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive.

The Story.....
The story was the bushman’s most sacred possession.
These people knew what we do not;
that without a story you have not got a nation, or culture, or civilization.
Without a story of your own, you haven’t got a life of your own.
Laurens Van der Post

You may be lost....
If you don't know the trees you may be lost in the forest, but if you don't know the stories you may be lost in life.

Simplicity....
Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent.
It takes a touch of genius-and a lot of courage-to move in the opposite direction.

January 1....
We spend January 1 walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched.
Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential.
